A mid-1970s survey found that 72% of teachers and laymen did not approve of 7th-grade students using calculators.

Early research similarly found that parents were worried that their children would become dependent on the technology and forget basic mathematical skills

I just came across a fantastic blog/opinion from ETHAN MOLLICK. You can access it here!!!

I am a strong believer that education models are not adapted to the reality of tomorrow. We created (and lived in some cases) an education model which was intrinsically rooted in learning passively, just being receptive to information… and adopted mechanisms of regurgitation in order to sail through through exams and years… (well at very least, this is my case).

Nowadays, AI and LLMs are in the spotlight when it comes to education. Cheating, lack of basic writing skills, laziness, poor engagement (I loved the quote from a student:  “Why raise your hand in class when you can ask ChatGPT a question?”)

Well not so fast, although, of course, Chat GPT and other AI tools will trigger societal changes; the keyword here is CHANGE.
Change in the way as a society we teach and tutor or kids. Change in the way Teacher prepare their classes. Change int he way we we ask your kids to take exams. Change in the way we provide additional support to our kids to fall in love with topics and learning.

Again quoting the excellent article from Ethan: ” The change is already here, and we will all encounter it sooner or later. It may force us to change models, but it will be in a way that ultimately enhances learning and reduces busywork.”

I highly recommend you read the full article and share, subscribe to his newsletter! I certainly did!
